Tips for finding & buying a new mattress

Posted On - October 5, 2017

We always hear friends and colleagues talk about their lack of sleep and lack of options when choosing a new mattress. And that’s before they even started talking about how expensive mattresses are!

From this, 624 was born, with the mission to offer the sleep-deprived a solution that they had never seen before – a high specification mattress that’s both affordable and has two different firmness options to choose from.

624 offers a unique, revolutionary mattress that lets you choose the level of firmness that offers comfort and promotes the deepest of sleep. With six different layers within the mattress, it provides you with great comfort and support. And the best part? It comes in a 50 x 50 x 100cm size box.

But what makes a good mattress? Is it the material such as latex, springs, memory foam etc? Is it the brand? Is it the cost? Or is it the recommendations from friends or family?

We decided to take the plunge and research different types of tips for finding and buying a new mattress. So, what are the experts saying?

  1. Identify the age of your current mattress

If your mattress is over eight years old, it’s probably a good idea to consider upgrading to a new mattress. However, this does not apply to all mattresses. Latex mattresses have an average lifespan of 12 years whereas the memory foam and hybrid mattresses have an averaglifespanan of 10 years. Innerspring & pillowtop averages between 6-8 years. If you’re waking up in pain, feeling restless or not being able to sleep through the whole night, it may be time to consider replacing your mattress.

  1. What type of mattress do you need?

Everyone is different and has different mattress preferences. It all depends on the certain benefits each person is looking for in a mattress.

  • Hybrid – combination of latex, memory foam, coils and other materials. Delivers bounce, cooling and responsiveness. Hybrids also provide pressure relief and support with a memory foam layer.
  • Latex – latex is known for its great responsiveness, comfort, bounce and cooling.
  • Memory Foam – great support, pressure relief and body contouring.
  • Coils – sleepers who wants a spring feel, bounce, cooling and strong edge support.
  • Pillow Tops – Sleepers who prefer a softer and more cushioned comfort.
  • Adjustable – Sleepers who have specific needs that would benefit from an adjustable foundation.
  1. What is your budget?

Everyone has their own certain set budget and it varies from person to person. Back in the days, the process was to go into mattress stores, test and try them and then get convinced by the salesmen to purchase this or that mattress all for the sake of their making a commission. Now many companies such as 624 has taken that middleman out, making the mattress (of equivalent specification) one third the cost of a store bought one. Identify your budget first before researching and searching for your right mattress.

  1. Research online before going shopping

It is always best to research on the different types of mattress that you want, and the brand and the cost of the mattress of your choosing. Take your time. It’s an important decision to find the right mattress for yourself or your family. Talk to your doctor if you have a health condition and let them recommend what would be best for you.

Watch out for gimmicks where mattress sellers are labelling their mattress a certain way to gain your interest such as “Orthopaedic” or “Medically-approved”. Understand what mattress would work for you for optimum comfort. Check out all the options and variations. Check the warranty, see if they have a trial period and the guarantees they offer. If they offer free pick up and refund, make sure they pick it up from your local area.

Check yourself also. Identify the right mattress depending on your sleeping habits and positions. Are you a front, back or side sleeper? How many hours do you spend on the bed per day? etc.

Identify the 3 ‘S’ of your mattress. Softness, Support & Size.

  1. Take your mattress for a test drive

At 624, we offer our customers a 100 nights trial where the customers have 100 nights to give it a go. We recommend a minimum of 30 nights to give time for the body to readjust and the best part about our mattress is that if the top firmness is too firm, you can unzip the topper and flip the top layer and change it to the medium-soft firmness. Even after flipping and the customer is still not satisfied after 30 nights or within 100 nights, we will pick it up and refund our customers back in full.

We identified that 10-20 mins test run in a store does not help make your decision in purchasing the mattress as the benefits require many nights for the body to adjust and helps you identify what your body needs for support.

Be aware that firm mattresses aren’t always better for your back. It is all determined by your own personal preference. Pillow tops aren’t for everyone. Pillow tops are used on coil mattresses and it is marketed towards heavier/larger people as they find the pillow tops provides extra cushioning between them and the coils. In our experience, the pillow top will probably flatten after just six months and not recover. Adjustable beds are also a great option and our 624 mattress works perfectly with adjustable bedframes.

  1. Sweat the small stuff

Comfort should be your top priority. It is important to buy the mattress that fits your needs and preference, not what they look like and how fancy they look. Make sure you size up your bedroom or where you will be placing your mattress. If you already have a bedframe, make sure you purchase the correct size. If not, make sure the room is big enough to accommodate not only the mattress but the bed base/frame as well.

Many don’t sleep alone. Check to see if other companies offer zero partner disturbance mattress. At 624 we offer just that. We also offer free delivery as well. Check the company’s logistics where you’re going to purchase your mattress from. Is it free delivery or is there a set fixed delivery fee? Always check to be sure you’re not going over budget.

  1. Accessorise

Don’t forget to accessorise your bed. Buy comforters, pillows, blankets, decorative pillows, sheets etc. No one likes a bare bed.
